Dès les premières notes de cet éponyme « Gorillaz », (« Re-hash »), impossible d’échapper au côté taillée sur mesure de cette musique, qui mêle, sous un aspect presque brouillon, les traits de standards pop à la frivolité d’innovations, telles que seule une bande de fous menés par Damon Albarn (Blur) était capable de réaliser. Belle alchimie que cet opus, qui groove sec, de rythmes et riffs bien sentis (« Tomorrow comes today »), qui rappellent l’attachement du groupe au rock (« Punk ») et à la pop (« 19-2000 ») tout autant qu’à l’électro (« Man research »), auquel il emprunte, outre l’iconographie, un sens du refrain entêtant (« Clint Eastwood ») et l’assurance de tubes planétaires. Le rendez-vous étant pris, rien n’a, à l’époque, permis d’en différer les effets et ce premier opus de Gorillaz, projet qui va vite devenir un groupe à part entière, va connaître une reconnaissance planétaire, à la hauteur de l’innovation que ce son et cette approche globale de la musique décloisonnée vont jeter à la face de l’auditeur moyen. Hip-hop, aux accents de bande originale de film (« sound check »), ce Gorillaz impose la bande à Albarn comme un sérieux out-sider des grandes productions léchées du moment, le talent et l’originalité en plus.
